HD Streaming Has Arrived!

It’s been a while since the last post, but for good reason! Since we added Vista support, the team has been hard at work on enhancements to the player to improve things like compatibility (across all supported platforms), playback stability, video quality, etc.

But the improvement we’re most excited about is the addition of the new HD channel! It’s currently a beta release and there are some minimum computer requirements you’ll need to satisfy to get the best experience (those requirements are listed in the player). But, if you do, the quality is really superb and hopefully it’s a big enough sampling of your favorite shows to keep you excited as we wait for the new Fall season (there are some really cool new shows on the way).

As always, please submit Feedback and let us know how we’re doing. We’re definitely listening.

Ready to watch Ugly Betty in high-def? Yeah, neither am I. But if your computer screen can handle HD video (a minimum 1024 x 768 resolution is recommended), you don’t need to buy an HD TV. ABC.com is experimenting with streaming shows over the Web in HD. You will need to download a new player from Move Networks (that won’t let you fast-forward through the ads, sorry) and a broadband connection. (Move just hired the former CTO of the Disney Internet Group, Douglas Parrish, as a senior VP).

This is a beta, though. When I tried to install the player, nothing happened. But it shows that media companies are thinking about bringing HD to your PC as well as your TV. They just need to get it to actually work (caveat: the problem could very well be on my end).

This is pretty good news! HD is slowly taking over and not supporting it means leaving more potential watchers (like myself) lingering. If some of these shows were distributed online in a high quality format, then I for one would see at least a couple of shows and maybe even get hooked on one.

    Job well done for ABC.

Kristin, keep up the good work on this blog and continue delivering news like this to the rest of us! :)
